The Tech News: The $100 Laptop! Cool....But Wait.

"CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--A low-cost computer for the masses moved one step closer to reality on Wednesday.

Nicholas Negroponte, the co-founder of the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, detailed specifications for a $100 windup-powered laptop targeted at children in developing nations. Nicholas Negroponte, who laid out his original proposal at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January, said MIT and his nonprofit group, called One Laptop Per Child, is in discussions with five countries--Brazil, China, Thailand, Egypt and South Africa--to distribute up to 15 million test systems to children.

In addition, Massachusetts is working with MIT on a plan to distribute the laptops to schoolchildren, Negroponte said.

"This is the most important thing I have ever done in my life," Negroponte said on Wednesday during a presentation at Technology Review's Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT. "Reception has been incredible. The idea is simple. It's an education project, not a laptop project. If we can make education better--particularly primary and secondary schools--it will be a better world."

He said a goal of the project is to make the low-cost PC idea a grassroots movement that will spread in popularity, like the Linux operating system or the Wikipedia free online encyclopedia. "This is open-source education. It's a big issue."

Negroponte said the idea is that governments will pay roughly $100 for the laptops and will distribute them for free to students.

The proposed design of the machines calls for a 500MHz processor, 1GB of memory and an innovative dual-mode display that can be used in full-color mode, or in a black-and-white sunlight-readable mode. The display makes the laptop "both an electronic book and a laptop," he said.

One display design being considered is a flat, flexible printed display developed at MIT's Media Lab. Negroponte said the technology can be used to produce displays that cost roughly 10 cents per square inch. "The target is $12 for a 12-inch display with near-zero power consumption," he said.

Power for the new systems will be provided through either conventional electric current, batteries or by a windup crank attached to the side of the notebooks, since many countries targeted by the plan do not have power in remote areas, Negroponte said.

The machines, which will run a version of the Linux operating system, will also include other applications, some developed by MIT researchers, as well as country-specific software. "Software has gotten too fat and unreliable, so we started with Linux," he said.New generation: The millennials connectivity, the systems will be Wi-Fi- and cell phone-enabled, and will include four USB ports, along with built-in "mesh networking," a peer-to-peer concept that allows machines to share a single Internet connection.

"In emerging nations, the issue is not connectivity," Negroponte said. "That was the issue, but there are many people working on it, (thanks to) global competitiveness. But for education, the roadblock is the laptop."

Five companies are working with MIT to develop an initial 5 million to 15 million test units within the year: Google, Advanced Micro Devices, News Corp., Red Hat and BrightStar, Negroponte said. He said the current plan is to produce 100 million to 150 million units by 2007.

Negroponte admits that his goals are ambitious. Currently, the world production of laptops is just under 50 million, he said.

While the initial goal of the project is to work with governments, Negroponte said MIT is considering licensing the design or giving it to a third-party company to build commercial versions of the PC. "Those might be available for $200, and $20 or $30 will come back to us to make the kids' laptops. We're still working on that," he said.

Others have launched low-cost PC ideas in the past, though MIT's project may be the most ambitious.

Last year, Advanced Micro Devices announced plans for its Personal Internet Connector--a prototype with a price tag of at least $185, with no display. And an Indian company called Novatium said it plans to offer a stripped-down home computer for about $70 or $75.

In addition, Microsoft's antipiracy-minded Steve Ballmer last year called for a move toward the $100 PC for developing nations."

The Tech News: The Samsung Digimax Pro 815 With The Largest LCD, 3.5 In!

The Pro815 is targeted at the advanced market segment of camera users and this camera has three really stand out features that can be called world's firsts for the digital camera segment:

The first thing you notice on this camera is definitely the screen. This is larger than a lot of handheld gaming console screens, it's monstrous in comparison to what you typically see in today's cameras. The model's on the showroom floor were not powered, but the one working model they had during the presentation was stunning in the brightness and ease of viewing it offered. Another great feature of the 815 is The 3.5" LCD could be a TV it's so big!! The LCD that resides on top of the lens, this allows you to hold the camera at waist or chest level and look down on the camera and focus the shot. The 1900 mAh battery should offer users up to 500 shots on one charge, even with the huge LCD sucking the life out of it. The 1900 mAh size battery is the largest of any camera to date. The battery and LCD do add weight to the camera (Samsung would not quote a weight number as it is still in development), but the fact this is an SLR substitute means you won't be carrying a bunch of lenses so that will keep overall travel weight down. The included standard lens shoots both 28mm wide-angle shots and has 420mm tele-zoom capabilities, with an SLR this would usually involve having two seperate lenses. Samsung promises it will have a huge number of offerings going into 2006 and this is just the start of it's agressive push to offer cameras that are highly competitive with pricing and offer new and advanced features and still meet the competition's price point for "equivalent" but, as Samsung would argue, inferior cameras.

Pros:
Huge 3.5" LCD screen15x optical zoom, and 4x digital zoom offers 60x zoom via standard lens1900 mAh battery is the largest in any camera, this one of which is 3.5" the battery is needed, it will provide enough juice for up to 500 shots which is very good. Another color LCD 1.44 in. on the top of the camera.

Cons:
The price at 899.99, it's not very afforable, and it's kinda on the big side too.

The Tech News: Intel based Apple PowerBooks?

"NEW YORK, November 7 (newratings.com) – Appleinsider said on Monday that Apple Computer Inc. is likely to launch its Intel (INTC) processor-based PowerBooks during 1Q06.

Apple announced in June 2005 that it would migrate to Intel-based processors from PowerPC technology by June 2006. According to Channel Register, Intel is expected to ship its Yonah processors, which are designed for laptops, during the end of 2005. Channel Register added that Appleinsider's reports suggesting the time frame for the launch of Apple's Intel-based laptops and Intel's launch of the Yonah processors would coincide. The Mac Observer said on Monday that UBS Investment Research expects Apple to witness robust sales for its iPod nano, digital video downloads and the new iMac G5.

Analyst Charles R Wolf of Needham & Co downgraded Apple Computer Inc from "buy" to "hold." In a research note published this morning, the analyst mentioned that the downgrade in the rating was based on valuation. Apple Computer's share price has appreciated significantly over the past one year on account of the launch of new iPods and Macs, and the company's robust financial results. The sales of the company's Mac computers have been significantly higher than the estimates so far this year, the analyst added. According to Needham & Co, Apple is dominating the online music market through its iTunes Music Store, which was launched during 2003."

You know, I would like to see one of these PC's. Who'da thunk it? I though I'll never see Apple and Intel come together for anything.

The Tech News: The World's 22 Megapixel!!

From now I will be adding to the lineup "The Tech News" or T.T.N. for tech products I don't have, but will like to have. I was search for digital cameras with very high megapixels and came across the "Kodak 39 megapixel CCD". I read about this camera, and it said that a 22 megapixel that is aready out. The P25. It is known as the highest megapixel camera out today, it's not really news beacause it came out last year, but I'm going to talk about it anyways!!

This back delivers images which have 5440 horizontal pixels and 4080 vertical pixels from a 48.9 x 36.7 mm (1.9 x 1.4 in) 22 megapixel CCD sensor. "The Phase One H25 has become something of a benchmark for studio-based professional photographers during the nine months or so since introduction. There is something about Phase One's ability to extract shadow detail and produce extremely clean raw files that seems to me to be just a step ahead of what is seen from other backs."

I'm now starting, "Video Of The Month". V.O.T.M., is a thing I do for my blog, every month I put a video here just for fun. This month in October features is a video from way back when in 94. When New Jack Swing was in, and like Cross Colours clothes was too! Jomanda's "I Like It (Nubia Soul Remix!)". From there last album "Nubia Soul", I just love this song, it took me a long time to find it on CD, but it was worth it! My Blog: Tech 4 U!

I started this blog in May of 2005 and I'm still new to blogging world, but been a member since April 2004. I started this blog to help people by putting reviews on products that don't have much infomation out there on them. I Got very upset about this problem, I would search for Tech products that I'm interested in, and I wouldn't be able to find anything on them. Build-To-Order Or Retail?

Velocity Micro (on the left) and at the bottom I have some of the PC's I will be talking about. I will be buying a new PC for Christmas, and I want it to last for a really long time. So I looked in the Sunday's paper and on Retail stores websites like Circuit City, Best Buy, Compusa, Office Depot, Office Max, ABC Warehouse, etc. I couldn't find any that I want from the retail stores, not enough choices for me. To find right one for me, and then I went to the build-to-order PC websites, like Velocity Micro, Alienware, VoodooPC, Dell, Falcon Northwest, Gateway, Tigerdirect, ABS, etc. And I notice that they have a lot more choices, like more hard drive space, case choices, things like that. Dell and Gateway only takes checks and credit card payment, so that's out the question, Voodoo PC's didn't have the right choices for me, neither do ABS, and Alienware and falcon Northwest are just too expensive for me. What's left? Tigerdirect and VelocityMicro, from Tigerdirect I chose The Systemax Venture HU H630 Intel Build-to-order PC Pentium 4 Built-To-Order Intel 955X Desktop PC $899.99 and $2,347.93 the final price after I did sconfigurationring. Great News: My Webcam Is Finally Up And Running!

I been trying to get my webcam up every since I got last Monday on the 12th of September. The webcam is localed in my room, mostly you will see the view from my window which is of heart of Downtown Detroit and across the water to Canada's Casino Windsor, my cat Kazine, spelling? and of the Betta fish Goldie, my ¿Karzy? younger brother Kevin, sometime you even might see me or my mom, and what's on mine PC desk. Just go to the bottom of my blog page. Broadcasting hours are on the Weekdays Monday thur Friday at 1:20 pm to 1:20 am sometimes it a be 12:20 am or even 11:20 pm. And the Weekend Saturday and Sunday at 5:30 pm around 12:00 am. The streaming broadcaster software I'm using is MyOwnCam and I'm no longer using JAVA Script Technology, just so you know. Great 5.1 Surround Sound Headphones For The Right Price!!!

I just love my new headphones set, its comes with a 5.1 amplifier box with a built-in Hi-Fi amplifier, the function of the amp box: power on and off master volume control. which has the best direct transmission effect for Hi-Fi sound. The 5.1 amplifier box can be used for 2 sets of 5.1 channel sourround sound headphones at the same time (but I don't know where I can buy just another pair of headphones without the amp box at?) and can be use for many sound sources, like DVD Players, Portable DVD Players, TVs, VCRs, PlayStation 1 and 2, X-Box, Game Cube, CD Players, Mp3 Players, Walkmans, PCs, Laptops, Notebooks, and Hi-Fi Receivers. The headphones has a adjustable head band for a better experience. The headphones has a binaural earcup design (I guess that means that the earcups tilt, which they do!) also has closed design for maximum noise canceling and excellent bass preformance, includes six speakers and two force feedback elements dilivering full frequency life like sound. Is Dolby digital & DTS ready, and the cord is very long about 10ft long! I use the headphones mostly to listen to music on my PC, hooked up from my amp box, to my wired romote control by using the RCA stereo jacks to 3.5mm stereo plug adapter, I first use the 3.5mm stereo plug to 9 pin jack wtihout the amp box, it didn't worked at first because I didn't have the connecter pluged in tight enough. I then relies that I needed the amp box for the best sound, and now use D1 to reconnected headphones to wired romote control. Here all what comes with package: 1 pairs of headphones, 1 amplifer box, and the connections, 1 plug 9 pin RCA connector that connects to the headphone jack on the front of 5.1 amplifier box, 1 Power supply, 1 3.5mm stereo plugs to RCA plugs, 1 3.5mm stereo plugs to RCA jacks, 1 3.5mm stereo plugs to RCA stereo jacks, 1 3.5mm stereo plugs to RCA stereo plugs, 1 RCA stereo jacks to 3.5mm stereo plug adapter, 1 3.5mm stereo jack 6.3mm stereo plug adapter, and 1 3.5mm stereo plug & 9 pin jack (it also connects to the wired romote control of the Z-5300e) though the 3.5mm stereo plugs to RCA are very thin. I can hear the radio on right side of the headphones when the music is very low or off, but when I turn it up I hear no radio. Their are a lot of jokes about the model name "KY-100". because you know the KY Warming Liquid, and Personal lubricant cream..LOL!!! The company KINYO, took the letters K and Y and put them together. Another company also came up with a bad model # The Nirotek "NIRO 1.1STD"Home Theater System. I mean "STD" come on....LOL!!!! I bought the headphones from newegg.com for 40.49 with sh 6.00, as bundled with 2 other items.

I love my View Pic Logitech 980186-0403 Silver USB Connector Desktop Microphone. Because I don't have to worry about drivers to download, and that it has easy plug-and-play, and that's what you get from the Logitech USB Desktop Microphone. You also get true digital quality and a noise-canceling technology to filter out unwanted background noise and deliver better voice recognition, better voice command, better voice recording, and more. Sleek, compact, and attractive, the itself is black, but on the pictures it looked like a very dark grey, and the base itself sliver. Nice...but I wished it would of been a all black color! Its also not built cheaply either, it is perfect for any desktop. This has got to be the best microphone I've ever owned. I'm thinging about getting my mom and younger brother one too! Note: You have be like a half foot away from the microphone, or you'll get distorted speech. For very cheap people this microphone isn't for you, because it cost almost 20 bucks! But I'm telling you it's worth it! Their is a 3.5mm version for 9.99 with 4.99 sh, links are below. I bought this microphone from newegg.com for 19.00 with sh for 4.99, it's bundled with two other items.
